October what?
Welcome back!
Wait…it's daylight savings time this weekend y'all! How is that even possible! It was just October 1st fifteen seconds ago... but daylight savings means an extra hour of sleep! Hunting and cold weather is also fast approaching. Speaking of those two things…have you seen the cute hunting hats and giveaway happening over at Burn 'n Design? That's right, blaze orange and camo to keep you warm and stylish while in the stand. Order any hats now until November 3rd for a chance at a fun prize!
Well, how's the homestead this week? Busy!! We can't guarantee many more enjoyable days outside so time to wrap up as many projects as possible without needing multiple layers. The firewood has arrived and just in time as we did start the wood stove this week for a few days. It is just so dang cozy!
Meet Miss Rosie!
Speaking of chickens! Our chicken of the Week is Rosie! She was extra excited with the coop prep we were doing that she stopped by for a quick pet and photo op but probably just wanted a snack. Rosie is a 3rd year lady here on the homestead. She is a Rhode Island Red and one of moms' favorites (please note- you might hear this about every lady). Rosie is more of the shy and silent type so when we get a chance to love on her we take our opportunity. She appreciated some treats later in the day!
All things carrots!!
The carrots were harvested over the weekend. This was the last official harvest from this years garden- even though the calendula was still looking pretty happy! We didn't know what to expect after the wonky test carrots we pulled last week, check out mom's TikTok for some funny wonky veg posts. But with each one that Megan pulled we were in shock and awe of the funny way they grew but also impressed by the size.
Side note-mom didn't thin the carrots this year (Thinning means you plant your carrots and when they start to come up, you thin the amounts that are in that row and move them to another.) While the harvest was good with a little more space they could have been much better! Either way, very thankful for the great harvest! We were able to get 7 quarts of canned carrots along with two bags of shredded carrots ready for the baker in the house to make us some carrot cake! Hint hint, Megs!!
As far as remaining projects, the list is pretty small guys! Small miracles! Anything else that gets done is a bonus and maybe it's time to give the house some much needed attention! LOL!
Tiny Chaos!
We had a small but mighty visitor on the homestead one afternoon this week. We had to babysit the cutest pup named Lucy! She is a quarter mini poodle, a quarter lahsa apso, and a half yorkie. (AKA a mouthful to say and the cutest mix of miniature chaos ever!) She is a whopping 3 pounds. She is a sassy little thing, but sweet as pie too. Buck enjoyed having a friend to play with for an afternoon. Everyone got along great until everyone wanted the same toy- Bucks bestest Abominable Snowman, who happens to be twice the size of Lucy. However, the cats were less than impressed with our visitor.
The one and only... Foxie Roxie!
Foxy Roxie joined us for supper one evening and enjoyed a yummy meal of pork loin, purple mashed taters and gravy. She informed us that she is on vacation. Side note- gram is retired! But this means she can sit and watch movies without any regrets. How long is she on vacation you might ask? Well, we really are not sure, but more importantly we should probably ask- How long does it take the energizer bunny to charge?
Thank y'all for reading, we will see you next week!
