A Cozy Winter Pause at the Funny Farm! By: Gone Homesteadin’

This past month on the homestead has been a little quieter than usual—but honestly, that’s just winter doing what winter does best. Between the cold temps and snow-covered days, we’ve leaned into slow living, cozy routines and finding joy in the small (and slightly ridiculous) moments that make this place home.

Buck continues to be our main source of daily entertainment. The long-running tradition of narrating the dogs’ thoughts is still alive and well in this house, and let’s be real—it never gets old. The chickens and ducks are tucked in snug and cozy in their coop, clearly unimpressed by the weather but grateful for the shelter. Bebes, our chunkiest house cat, has been living her absolute best life, taking advantage of catnip whenever she can, while the wood stove keeps everyone warm and content with that steady, comforting glow only a wood fire can give.

Megan has been anything but quiet—she’s been skating nonstop, gearing up for her second competition of the year in Brainerd next weekend and preparing for her big year-end skating show at the end of the month. In between practices, she’s been drinking lots of mullein tea to help with congestion and helping mom keep us well-fed with homemade soups and her legendary buffalo mac and cheese (a homestead favorite, no contest).

We also celebrated Lexi turning 18—which obviously required funny shirts as a surprise. Did she love them as much as we did? Questionable. Did we laugh a lot? Absolutely. And while she may officially be an adult now, we’re happy to report there’s no sudden gambling addiction to worry about—yet.

The sourdough has been slow this month, but we did branch out and try homemade tortillas, which might just become a new staple around here.  Stay tuned for more tortilla adventures!

And finally… we welcomed a new friend to the homestead. Meet Connor, our regal porch goose. He’s currently rocking a tuxedo-style shirt paired with a pink cowboy hat. He may need a wardrobe upgrade, but don’t worry—Connor is very secure in his manly state and wears pink beautifully.  And until it warms up outside he is cozy in the living room!

Wait—we can’t let you go without a Grandma Roxie-ism, because this one is puregold. She recently informed us that her favorite smell in the morning is when the coffee pot brews and honestly that feels like a pretty solid favorite around here on the homestead too.

So while the homestead may not have been bustling with big projects this month, it’s been full of warmth, laughter, good food and the kind of memories that make slow seasons just as meaningful. Winter may be quiet—but around here, it’s never boring.

Until next time,

-The Funny Farm :)
